Experience with Adolescents

JoAnn Mitchell, Ed.S., M.Ed, LPCC is passionate about working with children and adolescents and helping them to navigate the myriad of challenges that can present themselves during this time in their lives. JoAnn has dedicated the first half of her career specifically to helping young people discover who they are and support them in discovering meaning in their life. Her background includes over thirty years of experience as a classroom teacher, school psychologist, and building and district level administrator with students of all age levels, but with a specialty in working with middle and high school aged students. Understanding the social, emotional, academic, and developmental needs of this age group is important in being able to meet their counseling needs, and this is an area that JoAnn excels in, and is passionate about.

Finding the Right Therapist for Your Child

Adolescents are not junior versions of adults and their challenges and how to deal with them are unique to their age group. In seeking a therapist for your child, it is important to find someone who specializes in working with teens and understands their unique needs.

Experience and credentials are important, but you will find that it's usually the personality of a therapist and the therapeutic rapport that develops between the teen and therapist that is the most important factor of all.  Research has shown that the one of the most powerful predictors of therapeutic progress is patient-therapist match. Call today for a free consultation to find out if we are the right fit to support your teenager on their transformational journey.

How Do I Know for Sure if my Teenager Needs Therapy?

From mood swings to peer conflicts, all teenagers experience a rollercoaster ride of emotions and first time experiences. This alone can be a challenge as there is limited life experience to process through these novel experiences. With that said, therapy certainly does not need to be reserved for life-altering events or serious mental health problems. Instead, meeting with a therapist can prevent minor issues from turning into major problems and provide the support young people need as they move from childhood into young adulthood and experience many firsts with limited resources for coping.

If you think your teen could benefit from talking to a therapist, consider calling us for a free consultation. We welcome the opportunity to work with your child and support them on their transformational journey.
